How GA4 Can Help Your SEO Strategy

Google Analytics 4, GA4
19th July 2023

It is now the main Analytical tool of choice for website users, and Google has shifted everyone to using it when setting up their website, so how can we use its power?

Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is an integral tool. Without it, we’re unable to locate the best users, work on ways to improve single pages on a website, nor could we be able to solve how best to focus a site’s efforts.

This is why setting up a good marketing strategy helps not only your client, or your own website, but your way of thinking.

We only have so many hours in the day to keep monitoring websites and their performance, so having a good plan in place to keep you on track cuts out a lot of the legwork.

To boost your SEO strategy here are some key areas to think about.

Think more about your audience

Whether you are a novice to GA4 or have been using the many other iterations of Google Analytics over the years there will always be something to consider in the audience you have.

Audiences change based on many factors, like the rise in cost of living, or the development of new technology. Whatever your business aims and purpose you should always think about expanding outside of the box.

As Analytics can measure so many elements that you might not have thought about, it’s worth delving further in to see what could be a new approach to try.

In GA4, you can measure many different areas. Do you regularly post videos online? Have a tag to see if they are being watched very often. Are your conversions more likely to be found in video watchers, or have they found you through a recent social media campaign instead?

Take the time to know your audience and you’ll thank yourself later.

Explore micro conversions and macro conversions

While your main goal is probably to make a sale, or get a call back at least, it can feel disheartening to not see that happen every day.

Having a series of micro conversions can help ease your woes. These will include getting a potential customer’s email address, seeing a user scroll all the way down a page to read your article, or download a PDF you’ve recently shared.

These little wins can turn into big wins if you apply the right methods beforehand. For instance, PDF downloads should be sent to a customer’s email address. You then have that address that can be used to build a relationship and form a lead. Warm leads can turn into macro conversions.

GA4 can help with this in multiple ways. You can set up tags to follow a person’s journey, or use it as a marked Event in the Analytics system.

Use reports to your advantage

Reports are there for a reason and are often never to be looked at. They can drill down into what has been going well for a website and what hasn’t. From the Page Speed of a particular page to the bounce rate on those Google Ads – you need to find the root cause to a site’s problems as soon as possible.

Our recommended reports to explore include:

  • Funnel exploration – where you are able to see when users drop off in your user journey. Examples include abandoning the cart, losing interest in a video, and so on. You can find where people usually drop off and work on an approach that keeps the customer in the funnel.
  • User lifetime – keep tabs on recurring users or the behaviour of a customer over time. These journeys are especially interesting, as there will be a few ways a customer will find their way to you.
  • Path exploration – follow the journey of a particular user, who could eventually come to you to complete a sale.
  • User exploration – analyse individual user activities and where they have come from. If you explore particular users you can find where they are roughly located, their age range, and more.

So, do we think GA4 is a useful tool? Absolutely.

With so many options at your disposal, you can find the best ways to target your customers based on many different factors that GA4 offers.
